Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika is set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining an injury in Club Brugge’s loss to title rivals Royale Union SG on Sunday, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigeria midfielder turned 25 yesterday, so it would have been sweet to celebrate the occasion with a win. Unfortunately for him, it did not pan out that way.

Club Brugge scored the opener in the 15th minute courtesy of Brandon Mechele, but Mateo Biondic equalized for Royale Union SG 14 minutes later to ensure that the score was level at halftime.

In the second half, Onyedika’s afternoon took a turn for the worse as he appeared to be struggling. He eventually had to be replaced by Hans Vanaken.

Twelve minutes after his exit, the reigning Belgian champions took advantage of the Nigerian’s absence and scored through Besfort Zeneli.

That was how the game ended, as Royale Union SG claimed the win after 90 minutes.

As it stands, the nature of Raphael Onyedika’s injury is unknown. But with only a few weeks remaining in the season, it is possible that he will no longer play a role in Club Brugge’s campaign.

The Blauw-Zwart currently sit second in the championship race, four points behind Royale Union SG.

However, they still have the opportunity to right their wrongs. Club Brugge have seven games left to play, one of which is a direct rematch against Royale Union SG.

If they can put together a solid run of form over the next few weeks, they can still fancy their chances of reclaiming the title.

Meanwhile, Club Brugge will be hoping that Onyedika’s injury is not serious so that he can return to action quickly and provide a boost to their midfield.
