‘HUGE Pickup,’ ‘Fits Like a Glove’ — CBB World Reacts As UConn Steals Nik Khamenia From Duke in Transfer Portal

Basketball

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. After losing to UConn in heartbreaking fashion in the NCAA Tournament, former Duke Blue Devils forward Nik Khamenia decided to transfer to the Huskies on Saturday after a visit earlier this week.

Khamenia is a 6-foot-8 rising sophomore who was a former top-15 recruit, so the move drew strong reactions from the college basketball world.

Basketball Nik Khamenia Praised As a Perfect Fit With UConn Huskies

At Duke, Khamenia played all 38 games, averaging 5.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game while shooting 44.4% from the field and 34% from 3-point range for the 35-3 squad. While his numbers don’t jump off the page, his impact goes beyond the box score.

Many college basketball analysts raved about Khamenia’s fit in Hurley’s system.

“Dan Hurley has his Alex Karaban replacement,” ESPN’s college basketball insider Jeff Borzello wrote. “Former top-15 recruit averaged 5.7 points and 3.3 rebounds, but posted 10.7 points in three ACC tournament games when given a bigger role. Skilled offensively.”

“Khamenia is exactly what Dan Hurley wants out of his wings/forwards: high feel, elite decision making,” wrote high-school coach Bryce Cutler. “UConn’s complex offensive action playbook is built on elite decision-making:
Top 10 nationally in AST% over the last 3 years. Khamenia fits that mold like a glove.”

“UConn landing Duke transfer Nik Khamenia is a nice strategic fit for the Huskies. Khamenia played an interesting role at Duke, logging time at the four and even the one late in the season. The 6’8” freshman could potentially fill a role similar to Karaban’s at the four,” reporter Vince Wolfram added.

“HUGE pickup for the Huskies,” college basketball insider Jeff Goodman chimed in. “The 6-8 freshman averaged 5.7 points this past season for the Blue Devils. Khamenia gives the Huskies a stretch 4-man that Dan Hurley hopes can be an Alex Karaban type of guy.”

CBS Sports’ college basketball analyst Isaac Trotter labeled Khamenia to UConn as “quite possibly the best player-scheme fit of the transfer portal cycle.”

“Nik Khamenia’s game meshes almost perfectly with what UConn needs from its 4-men,” Trotter explained.

Khamenia will try to help fill the void in the frontcourt left by departing stars Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr., who both played a pivotal role in UConn’s runner-up finish in the national championship game. The Huskies have a few different ways to build their forward rotation now, especially after Najai Hines also transferred to UConn from Seton Hall.

While much of the conversation about Khamenia’s move focused on his fit at UConn and what this means for the Huskies, the account DukeInDepth wrote, “Nik Khamenia commits to UConn, I normally say I wish the best for the player, but this is more complicated…perhaps I should clarify here that hopefully he thrives *personally*”

UConn overcame a 19-point deficit to defeat Duke in the Elite Eight thanks to a last-second shot by Braylon Mullins, so this move understandably stings for the Blue Devils and their fans. Losing a key player is never fun; losing him to a team that just ended your season in heartbreaking fashion several weeks ago makes it an even tougher pill to swallow.
