Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Adams, Pepi, and more

Soccer

Tyler Adams made his return to the Bournemouth squad on Saturday, helping the Cherries throw another wrench into the Premier League title race.

Adams came off the bench and played 20 minutes as Andoni Iraola’s men shocked league-leading Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium. It marked the U.S. men’s national team midfielder’s first appearance since March 3 after being sidelined with a slight knock over the past few weeks.

Junior Kroupi and Viktor Gyokeres traded first-half goals in the match but Bournemouth had the last laugh as Alex Scott played the hero with 16 minutes to go.

Adams won both of his duels, completed six passes, and made one tackle as a second-half substitute. It was a solid showing for the veteran midfielder, who will be looking to force his way back into the starting lineup over the final stretch of the league season.

Bournemouth jumped up to 11th place following the road win, sitting three points out of sixth-place Chelsea in the race for Europe. Up next for Adams and Co. is a trip to Newcastle United on April 18.

In England, Antonee Robinson started in Fulham’s road loss to Liverpool. Haji Wright and Coventry City moved one step closer to earning Premier League promotion. Aidan Morris and Middlesbrough’s worrying run continued at home against Portsmouth.

In Germany, John Tolkin suffered an injury in Holstein Kiel’s road win in the 2. Bundesliga. Malik Tillman made a late cameo in Bayer Leverkusen’s road triumph over Borussia Dortmund.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic and AC Milan suffered a humiliating home loss to Udinese. Gianluca Busio and Venezia earned a road draw in Serie B play.

In France, Folarin Balogun scored for the seventh-straight Ligue 1 match despite Monaco’s disappointing road loss to Paris FC. Tim Weah went the distance in Marseille’s home victory over Metz.

Elsewhere, Auston Trusty and Celtic picked up three points at home against St. Mirren. Bryan Reynolds helped Westerlo to a road win over Standard Liege. Donovan Pines and Grazer AK suffered a setback on the road in Austrian league play. Alex Zendejas assisted once in Club America’s home draw with Cruz Azul. Danny Leyva started but Necaxa suffered a road loss to Queretaro.
