Cult UK group Carter USM have re-issued their singles collection ‘Straw Donkey…’

The band remain in the public consciousness, with figures such as 6 Music broadcaster Steve Lamacq continuing to champion their work. Carter USM – the Unstoppable Sex Machine – have now offered fresh fans a primer, with their singles collection coming back to record racks.

Out now, the compilation was first released in 1995 and it basically represents the essential point of introduction to Carter USM.

The tracklisting boasts Top 20 singles – such as ‘The Only Living Boy In New Cross’, ‘After The Watershed (Early Learning The Hard Way)’, ‘Rubbish’, and ‘Lean On Me I Won’t Fall Over’ – alongside enduring classics such as ‘Sheriff Fatman’, ‘Anytime Anyplace Anywhere’ and ‘Bloodsport For All’.

Punchy politicised guitar music, the music still stands up even after all this time – testimony to their songwriting, but also the bleakness of our time.

The material was newly remastered by Phil Kinrade at AIR Mastering, and it is available now on vinyl and CD.

The vinyl edition will be pressed on two 140g black vinyl, housed in a gatefold Sleeve featuring an obi-strip and new track-by-track sleeve notes by Jim Bob and Fruitbat. Meanwhile, the CD edition includes a DVD featuring a restored edition of the original ‘Straw Donkey’ video collection, enhanced with a brand-new audio commentary by Jim Bob and Fruitbat.

It’s a fruitful spell for Carter USM fans – you can catch Jim Bob on a solo tour this Spring.
