Mercy Koech recounted how she joined the US military after being told she was too short to join the Kenyan army.

The rejection turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as she later joined the US Army, received training, and eventually moved to the Navy, where she had the opportunity to serve during the Afghanistan war.

“That was the craziest experience. We first flew to Qatar, then to Kuwait. You could carry over five bags with you, and no one helps you. Before landing in Afghanistan, you are given warnings. Once the plane lands, you have to be on the move. Rocket attacks were very common. The Taliban are very alert. We were a crew of 83 people. You land as you move,” she said.
