The T&T Geriatric Society held another successful Health Fair on Saturday, February 7 at the Divali Nagar Site, Chaguanas. The Society collaborated with UWI, through several departments, namely the Council of Legal Education, which offered relevant information on key issues frequently affecting the elderly- e.g. Wills, Property Issues, Succession Planning; the

School of Nursing – which offered testing for and advice on blood sugar and blood pressure; the School of Optometry- with comprehensive eye testing and referral for follow-up; the Medical Faculty- comprehensive medical assessments were conducted by 13 medical students under the mentorship of Dr Mallika Tripathi and seven doctors.

This partnership was spearhead and supervised by Dr Cherrita Ramsaran from the department of Public Health and Primary Care, Faculty of Medical Science, UWI, as part of the 4th year mandatory Community Outreach. In addition, participants assisted in a study re follow up on clinic attendance and were tested for depression and dementia. Vitamin B shots were also administered.
The Department of Sociology was also present to engage the Society’s assistance in a Project on Ageing in T&T.
Bmobile and representatives offered information and participants received samples of Cera V products.
About 170 people – elderly and young – attended the Fair. Several of them signed up membership in the organisation. The Society expressed appreciation for the active participation of its adult volunteers and specifically, the many young volunteers who continue to add to success of its programmes.
