Residents in Kedah and Perlis adjust routines and take health precautions as temperatures soar, with some businesses seeing a surge in demand.
ALOR SETAR: Residents across Kedah are taking extra precautions in their daily routines as a Level 1 and 2 heat wave grips several districts.
Temperatures reaching between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius have prompted widespread caution to avoid adverse health effects.
Local resident Mohd Sharudin Ahmad Sobri, 38, said he has significantly reduced his outdoor activities. He avoids unnecessary exposure to the intense heat, especially when riding his motorcycle.
“If there is nothing to do, I spend more time at home,” he explained. He added that going outside now causes his skin to feel sore from the sun.
Another resident, Nur Suraya Johari, 27, now carries an umbrella whenever she leaves the house for protection. She is particularly cautious about taking her young children out in the dangerous conditions.
“In this situation, taking care of my health and drinking enough water is very important,” she stated.
For some, the extreme weather has brought an unexpected business boost. Sugarcane juice trader Mahdi Hassan, 46, reported that his sales have doubled.
His daily sales have increased from around 40 kilogrammes to approximately 80 kilogrammes, often selling out by mid-afternoon.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department confirmed the heat wave conditions yesterday. The entire state of Perlis and four districts in Kedah are under a Level 2 alert.
Thirteen other areas in Peninsular Malaysia are at Level 1. A Level 2 alert is declared when maximum temperatures exceed 37 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days.
The affected Kedah districts at Level 2 are Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Pendang and Baling.
