Ademola Lookman started from the bench in a decision by Diego Simeone that ultimately backfired, as Barcelona claimed an impressive 2-1 away win over ten-man Atlético Madrid in La Liga on Saturday night, Soccernet.ng reports.

In a match where attacking spark and creativity were needed, Atlético left one of their most dangerous players watching from the sidelines for long periods.

Since arriving in February, Lookman has built a reputation for delivering in big games. He announced himself to Atlético fans with a stunning performance against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, scoring once and assisting another in a dominant 4-0 win. His direct running, sharp finishing, and ability to beat defenders one-on-one made him a constant threat.

He followed that up with another strong showing in the Madrid derby against Real Madrid, opening the scoring in a thrilling 3-2 defeat. Even though Atlético lost that game, Lookman’s energy and attacking intent stood out before he was substituted after an intense hour. Across all competitions, he has quickly become one of Atlético’s most important attacking players, contributing five goals and four assists in just 14 appearances.

So why was he benched for such a crucial match?

Simeone’s decision appears to have been shaped by several factors. The Nigerian forward had just played 180 minutes during the international break, raising concerns about fatigue. The Atlético coach has also spoken about the need for greater defensive discipline in his system, suggesting Lookman still has work to do off the ball. With two big European games coming up, squad rotation also played a part, as Simeone looked to keep him fresh as an ‘impact substitute.’

Soccer Barcelona punish Atlético as title race shifts

The match itself began in a tense and balanced way. Atlético took the lead in the 39th minute through Giuliano Simeone, giving the home fans hope of a big result. However, Barcelona responded almost immediately, with Marcus Rashford equalising just three minutes later after a clever attacking move.

The turning point came just before half-time when Nicolás González was sent off, leaving Atlético with 10 men. From that moment, Barcelona took control, dominating possession and pushing Atlético deeper into their own half.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Atlético defended bravely for much of the second half. But their resistance finally broke late on. A powerful effort from João Cancelo was pushed out by Juan Musso, and Robert Lewandowski reacted quickest to score, sealing an important 2-1 victory.

It was the kind of game where Lookman’s pace and creativity could have made a real difference. His ability to carry the ball forward and relieve pressure might have helped Atlético cope better, especially after going down to 10 men.

The result is a major boost for Barcelona, who now extend their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points, strengthening their grip on the title race.

With two crucial Champions League clashes between these sides coming up in the next ten days, Atlético boss Simeone will have a chance to respond. He may need to rethink his approach, and ensure that one of his most dangerous weapons, Lookman, is not left out when it matters most.
