“It starts now” – Ex-Flying Eagles boss issues rallying call for 2030 FIFA World Cup

Former coach of the Nigeria U-20 team, Fatai Amoo, has called for the Super Eagles to infuse developing players into their fold ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.

Eric Chelle was unable to send Nigeria to the Mundial despite sealing the play-offs after a brilliant outing in the final group game against the Republic of Benin.

They took the first step in the play-offs by defeating Gabon, but they lost to DR Congo, which eventually went all the way to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After missing consecutive World Cup tournaments, the former Flying Eagles urged the NFF to return to the development of younger talents to balance out the already aged players as Nigeria looks forward to 2030.

“With what is coming up now, we should begin to inject new players, young, talented ones; they are still available,” the former Shooting Stars coach said in quotes revealed by Brila.

“I know some of these players – if we qualify for the next World Cup – will be able to play because of their development.

“Right from the next AFCON, if we are serious about doing something good by way of qualifying for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, it starts from the next AFCON.

“All the games we are playing, we should start looking at who will take the position of our players who are starting to age.

“It has to be done, the results are not what we should be after now; rather, we should be focused on improving our football so that by the time we are playing the qualifiers of the World Cup, we should have the team ready,” Fatai Amoo concluded.
