Werder Bremen’s Sporting Director, Clemens Fritz, has weighed in on the club’s decision to sign Victor Boniface from Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 25-year-old was close to joining AC Milan on loan, but some issues with his knees forced the deal to fall through.

Surprisingly, Werder submitted a loan offer for the Nigerian on the summer transfer deadline day, and the striker opted to move to Weser Stadion.

Speaking on a Sport 1 broadcast, the Werder Bremen sports director admitted to mistakes in the transfer market, including the deal that brought Boniface to the riverside.

“I’m standing in front of our squad. But we were wrong, certainly, in our offensive game. We said we want to be brave,” the 45-year-old said in quotes revealed by Nopo.

“We want to bet on young players. And certainly not everything went through like that right away. We cannot speak of mistakes.

“To take an economically manageable risk and rather to have the courage and to see the opportunity.

“On the one hand, we wanted to develop a Keke; on the other hand, we wanted to win the quality that Victor undoubtedly has for us.

“According to the current state of affairs, it must be said that this did not work out for both of them,” Mr Fritz said after Boniface’s loan had to be cut short, with the striker scoring no goals in his time at the club.
