Joburg mayor to visit site of building collapse in Ormonde

JOHANNESBURG – Joburg mayor Dada Morero and his MMCs will visit Ormonde in the south of Joburg on Tuesday.

That’s where search and rescue operations are continuing after a deadly building collapse on Monday.

Six people are confirmed dead, while two bodies have been visualised within the concrete slabs.

One person is still unaccounted for. Three others are in hospital.

Workers were busy at a construction site when a floor gave way and collapsed.  

Some workers are believed to be trapped under a concrete slab.  

This is just one of many buildings that have collapsed in recent months.  

A building collapse in George resulted in 34 deaths in 2024.

Last December, five people were killed and several injured when a temple collapsed in Verulam in Durban.

Also in December, three people died in a double-storey house collapse in Soweto.  

Some of these incidents were linked to the use of substandard materials.

In others, contractors were found to be cutting corners.
