Civils contractor Costain has been selected by client Severn Trent to upgrade Rugby Newbold sewage treatment works.

The contractor has been appointed as both principal contractor and principal designer to deliver the £45m scheme, which is scheduled for completion in 2028.

Costain said it will design and build a new activated sludge plant to raise the site’s dry weather flow treatment capacity by 28 per cent, from 21,600 cubic metres a day to 27,598 cubic metres a day.

The treatment system will integrate with existing infrastructure and will improve resilience during periods of variable weather, it added.

The upgrade is intended to meet requirements under the Asset Management Plan 8 Water Industry National Environment Programme, which mandates higher permitted volumes of water flow in periods of dry weather.

Costain’s scheme includes new pumping stations, four final settlement tanks each measuring 29 metres in diameter, and a chemical dosing plant.

The contractor will also expand and upgrade inlet works, alongside wider improvements to site utilities and storm capacity.

Costain said it would deliver the project using modern methods of construction, including offsite manufacturing and design for manufacture and assembly, to improve programme efficiency and safety.

Severn Trent and Costain will work collaboratively on elements of the inlet upgrades to reduce delivery risk.

Costain water sector director Matt Bateman said the firm would “deliver high quality infrastructure upgrades quickly and safely” and highlighted its “track record of identifying construction efficiencies”.

Severn Trent delivery business lead Andrew King said the scheme would “bring a huge benefit to the way the site operates” and allow the site to “hold even more rainwater during storms”, reducing the risk of flooding and overflow use.
