This follows a pledge by National Economic Development Party leader Mike Sonko to clear pending mortuary bills, provide coffins, and facilitate transport for all victims of the floods in Nairobi.

Sonko said the remaining 22 bodies will be transported once families finalise burial arrangements in their respective rural homes.

He also urged leaders to set aside their political differences and avoid politicising the flood tragedy, instead calling for unity in addressing the flooding crisis and supporting affected families.

“When I was governor, we made it a habit to unclog drainage to ease flooding. Instead of leaders coming together to help, some are busy politicising the issue. That is wrong. Let us come together and do what is supposed to be done,” Sonko said.

How Sonko planned to help flood victims

Speaking at his Upper Hill office on Tuesday, March 10, the NEDP leader announced that his Sonko Rescue Team will help families of 27 flood victims whose bodies are currently at city mortuary.

He revealed that the initiative will involve paying mortuary fees, providing coffins and transporting the deceased to their rural homes for burial.

According to Sonko, the move is meant to ease the financial and emotional burden facing families already devastated by the ongoing floods.

The former governor further stated that the team would take full responsibility for burial logistics for the affected families.

Why does Babu blame poor planning for Nairobi floods?

In other news, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino proposed measures that would alleviate Nairobi from perennial floods that have been witnessed in the city.

Following recent floods in Nairobi that claimed at least 27 lives and caused significant property damage, an MP has proposed deepening and expanding major rivers as a solution.

In a video statement, the MP criticised the Nairobi county leadership under Johnson Sakaja, asserting that poor planning and resource mismanagement, rather than natural causes, are to blame for the city’s recurring flooding problem.

According to him, there had been prior warnings from the Kenya Meteorological Department that the city would experience heavy rainfall likely to lead to flooding.

While acknowledging that rainfall cannot be controlled, the MP insisted that proper infrastructure and planning could significantly reduce the impact of floods.
