“Fela Belongs In A League Of His Own”

  • A debate has arisen comparing Wizkid to Fela after Wizkid claimed he is “bigger” than his father.

Femi Kuti, the Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician and eldest son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has weighed in on the recent debate comparing singer Wizkid to his late father.

The discussion erupted after Wizkid claimed he is “bigger” than Fela while responding to Seun Kuti’s criticism of both him and his fans over the comparison.

In an interview with Arise TV via Skype from Los Angeles, Femi expressed that he wished the controversy had never arisen, emphasizing his good relationships with both Seun Kuti and Wizkid, who are at the center of the debate.

He described the argument as a misplaced focus, suggesting that emerging artists should prioritize advocating for better governance and addressing meaningful issues rather than engaging in such disputes.

Femi stressed that Fela occupies a unique place in music history and cannot be compared to any other artist. He added that the late Afrobeat legend deserves admiration and respect.

He stated, “Fela is our father, and even younger artists show him respect. The Fela vs. Wizkid discussion shouldn’t even be an issue. Fela set the standard for music and artistry in Nigeria. He belongs in a league of his own, and we should simply idolize and honor him. I don’t want to get involved in Seun and Wizkid’s matter because Seun is my brother, and Wizkid is like a son to me. I just wish it hadn’t arisen.”

Femi Kuti is currently in Los Angeles, where he is set to receive Fela’s posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards this weekend.
