Ademola Lookman’s long-awaited first La Liga appearance in front of Atletico Madrid’s home supporters ultimately ended in disappointment as the Rojiblancos slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat against Real Betis on Sunday night, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigeria international, who joined from Atalanta on deadline day, had arrived in Madrid with momentum after a sparkling club debut in midweek’s Copa del Rey rout, where he produced a goal and an assist in a commanding 5-0 win over the same opponents.
That display raised expectations of another influential outing at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Instead, Betis stunned the hosts with a disciplined performance capped by Antony’s clinical strike midway through the first half.
The former Manchester United winger fired home in the 28th minute, punishing a rare lapse in Atletico’s usually solid defence.
Lookman, lively throughout his 74-minute appearance, came agonisingly close to marking his home debut in style just before the interval. His well-timed header beat the goalkeeper but was chalked off after a tight offside call, leaving the crowd groaning in frustration.

Soccer Ademola Lookman: Positive despite disappointment
The Super Eagles star remained heavily involved after the break, stretching Betis’ back line with his pace and movement while narrowly missing the target with another effort. His growing influence also saw him pick up a booking in the 56th minute following a late challenge as he chased down a dangerous cross.

Despite the setback, Lookman struck an upbeat tone after the final whistle, sharing his emotions with fans on social media.
“Not the result we wanted but we stay positive. Very special moment making my debut in the Metropolitano. Aupa Atleti,” he wrote on X.
Atletico’s defeat leaves them third in the La Liga standings. Diego Simeone’s side will now look to respond quickly when they travel to face struggling Rayo Vallecano next weekend, with their opponents currently sitting 18th in the table.
