Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has returned to Bayer Leverkusen to commence rehabilitation following a successful knee surgery, Soccernet.ng reports.

The recovery journey is expected to keep the forward sidelined for the remainder of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season.

The 25-year-old Nigerian striker, on loan at Werder Bremen, underwent the procedure on January 10 to address persistent right knee issues.

These problems stem from long-standing concerns, including two cruciate ligament tears dating back to 2019, which have disrupted his career and affected his performance during his loan spell.

Boniface’s time at Werder Bremen, which began earlier this season, was marred by recurring knee problems which limited his appearances and overall impact.

After months of enduring pain, both clubs agreed that surgery was necessary to ensure his long-term fitness.

The striker is expected to be out for several months, effectively ending his campaign with Bremen.

Boniface has been a key figure for both club and country before his injury woes. His absence will be felt by this club and even the Super Eagles, particularly with upcoming international fixtures.

Recall that former Nigerian international Obafemi Martins publicly encouraged Boniface, stating he would come back stronger from this setback.

“I had surgery on both knees, and I even played with metal in my leg for nine years. You will come back stronger; just keep the faith. Your talent will not go to waste.” Martins said, as quoted by Punch.

Both Bayer Leverkusen are closely monitoring his progress, with hopes high for a successful return to the pitch.
