Americans Abroad Midweek Preview: McKennie faces Balogun, and more

Soccer

Matchday 8 of the UEFA Champions League is upon us and two key U.S. men’s national team players will meet with hopes of helping their clubs conclude the league phase on a positive note.

Weston McKennie and Juventus travel to Folarin Balogun and Monaco on Wednesday night. McKennie and Juventus are currently in 15th place in the league phase and could finish in the top-eight with a victory at the Stade Louis II. McKennie has continued to play a key role in Luciano Spalletti’s squad, scoring in three-straight UCL appearances.

Balogun and Monaco are just above the red line in the table, but just barely heading into the final day. The Ligue 1 club are one point clear in 21st place and will need points in order to clinch a spot into the playoff round. Balogun has three UCL goals to his name this season and will be hoping he can add to that total in a crucial match.

Elsewhere, Johnny Cardoso and Atletico Madrid host Bodo/Glimt in Champions League action while Tim Weah and Marseille visit Club Brugge. Auston Trusty and Celtic host FC Utrecht in Europa League play. James Sands and St. Pauli welcome RB Leipzig to town in Bundesliga action.
