Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Weah, Agyemang, and more

Soccer

Marseille’s hopes of remaining in the Ligue 1 title race this winter received a major boost on Saturday at the Orange Velodrome.

Timothy Weah registered one assist and played 90 minutes as Marseille eased itself past Lens 3-1 in league play. The U.S. men’s national team wingback delivered his latest productive shift of the new year as Marseille stayed in the top-three of the league table.

Amine Gouiri and Ethan Nwaneri both scored in the opening 13 minutes of the match, giving Roberto De Zerbi’s men a 2-0 advantage. Weah set up Gouiri for his second goal of the night, walking away with his third assist of the season.

Despite a consolation goal from Lens, Marseille would hang on for three points at home.

Weah, who now has six goal contributions on the season, will now look forward to UEFA Champions League play midweek. Marseille travels to Club Brugge on Wednesday in both clubs’ Matchday 8 finale.

In England, Chris Richards scored once in Crystal Palace’s home loss to Chelsea. Antonee Robinson and Fulham earned a late win over Brighton & Hove Albion. Patrick Agyemang scored in Derby County’s home draw with West Bromwich Albion. Sam Coffey made her Manchester City debut in WSL play.
