MPB Structures has been awarded a £37m civils contract from the Midland Metro Alliance for the second phase of the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro extension programme.

Phase two work is already underway, MPB said in a statement.

The firm is delivering the full civil engineering package, including the construction of more than 600 metres of new infrastructure.

This follows MPB’s phase one work on the Delta Junction segment of the scheme.

The current phase includes installation of 8,700 metres of bored piles, 1,260 tonnes of sheet piles, and 7,000 cubic metres of structural concrete. The package also includes 622 tonnes of structural steelwork.

Engineering elements include a 225-metre multi-span viaduct and a 100-metre reinforced concrete slab built on an existing railway embankment.

The West Midlands Metro programme is being delivered by the Midland Metro Alliance – a consortium including the West Midlands Combined Authority, Egis plus contractors Barhale, Bouygues UK and Colas.

MPB said it is working alongside these delivery partners.

The two-phase West Midlands Metro extension programme spans 11km from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill.

It is worth £261m, according to data intelligence provider Glenigan.
