Newcastle United 3-0 PSV: Howe´s men boost top-eight hopes with comfortable victory

Soccer

Newcastle United boosted their hopes of a top-eight finish in the Champions League as Yoane Wissa grabbed a goal and assist in their 3-0 win over PSV on Wednesday.

Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes were also on target for the Magpies, who sit in seventh place on 13 points ahead of their final league phase clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Eddie Howe’s side raced into an eighth-minute lead when PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar saw his poor clearance collected by Bruno Guimaraes. The Newcastle captain fed in Joelinton, who laid the ball off for Wissa to scuff into the net.

And the hosts capitalised on some more poor defensive play from the Eredivisie leaders to double their tally in the 30th minute as Yarek Gasiorowski’s poor back pass was intercepted by Wissa, who squared for Gordon to tuck home.

Newcastle’s exceptional first-half showing came at a cost, though, with Guimaraes forced off with an injury after colliding with Kovar, but it mattered little to the Magpies.

Their three points were sealed in the 65th minute through a brilliant solo effort from Barnes, who picked out the bottom-right corner following a mazy run from 30 yards out.

Wissa came close to adding his second late in the day, but he was unable to stretch for Barne’s inviting centre, with Newcastle closing out the remaining minutes with ease.

Data Debrief: Gordon matches Shearer as Wissa makes his mark

Gordon has only managed two goals in 17 Premier League appearances this season, but the England international has been in sensational form on the European stage.

Indeed, he netted his sixth goal in the Champions League this season, a total only Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe (11) and Harry Kane (seven) can better in major European competition, while he also equalled Alan Shearer’s goal record in UEFA’s flagship tournament.

For Wissa, meanwhile, he became the seventh Newcastle player to score on his first home start in the Champions League, while also becoming the 11th player from DR Congo to score in the competition. Only two have done so with English clubs – the other also for Newcastle – thanks to Lomana Lua Lua.

But overall, Newcastle were good value for their win. They registered an expected goals (xG) total of 2.52 from their 11 shots compared to PSV’s 0.34 from their six attempts.
