Americans Abroad Midweek Preview: Tillman faces Downs, and more

Soccer

The second half of the Bundesliga season continues midweek with two U.S. men’s national team attackers squaring off.

Malik Tillman and Damion Downs meet as Bayer Leverkusen takes on Hamburg in a crucial match for both clubs.

Tillman played 90 minutes on Saturday in Leverkusen’s 4-1 home thumping at the hands of VfB Stuttgart. The American midfielder has continued to rack up the minutes in Kasper Hjulmand’s squad, but is without a goal or assist in his last eight appearances for the club.

Downs recently joined Hamburg on loan for the remainder of the league season, seeking to get back to his best. After failing to score during the first half of the campaign for Southampton, Downs heads back to Germany where he excelled last season.

He made a 78-minute debut on Saturday in Hamburg’s 2-1 road loss to Freiburg. With Hamburg looking to pull a major upset midweek, Downs could be called on to lead it.

In Germany, James Sands and St. Pauli visit Wolfsburg while Gio Reyna and Borussia Moenchengladbach visit Cole Campbell and Hoffenheim.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic and AC Milan visit Como in Serie A play.

In France, Tim Weah and Marseille take on Bayeux in Coupe De France action.

Elsewhere, Sergino Dest and PSV visit FC Den Bosch in Eredivisie action. Lynden Gooch and Huddersfield Town seek advancement in the EFL Trophy. Alex Zendejas and Club America host Atletico San Luis as Liga MX play rolls on.
