Linxon wins £143m contract for Isle of Lewis electricity substation

Business handshake

Construction engineering firm Linxon UK has been awarded a £143m contract to build a new alternating current substation on the Isle of Lewis.

The work is part of Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks’ (SSEN) programme to expand power infrastructure across the north of Scotland, where Balfour Beatty and others have also been appointed to long-term frameworks.

The contract, awarded through a competitive procedure with negotiation, was signed on 22 December 2025. The notice confirms Linxon was the only bidder.

The project forms the initial phase of work on a proposed substation to support increased capacity for renewable energy transmission. Construction will be carried out by Linxon using in-house design and delivery capabilities. The client is SSE plc.

No architect has been named for the scheme.

The contract value, listed at £142.95m excluding VAT, is not funded through European Union programmes. The procurement notice was first published in 2021.

The substation forms part of SSEN Transmission’s Western Isles project, which aims to connect up to 1.8GW of renewable generation from the islands to the mainland grid.

Subject to regulatory approvals, the overall programme is due for completion in 2030.
