Contractor picked for construction training college job

A contractor has been appointed to convert part of a Stevenage town centre car park into a construction training facility for North Hertfordshire College.

R G Carter Cambridge signed a £4.6m contract to deliver the six-month refurbishment project, which involves fitting out the ground floor of the St George’s Way multi-storey car park.

The deal was procured by Stevenage Borough Council under an open competition below-threshold route.

The scheme will create a new engineering and construction campus for the college, replacing its existing site at Argyle Way.

It will provide approximately 3,450 square metres of workshops, classrooms and welfare space, including full mechanical and electrical fit-out.

The campus will occupy the area formerly used by Stevenage’s indoor market, which is being relocated by the council to vacant ground-floor units at a site around 50 metres from the existing facility.

Planning permission for the change of use was granted in July.

Minor alterations to the facade include new louvred panels and mechanical ventilation ducts, while existing entrances will be retained.

The site sits outside the primary retail frontage but within the designated town centre area.

Saunders Partnership is the architect for the scheme, which is part of the borough’s wider regeneration programme.

Construction is scheduled to complete in June 2026.
