Texas High School Football Player Arrested for Accidentally Shooting Teammate After Winning State Title

A Texas high school football player was arrested after allegedly shooting a teammate by accident with a rifle just hours after the team won a state championship.

Xavier Mayfield, 18, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked into the Dallas County Jail on Saturday, December 20. He is being held on a $50,000 bond. It is unclear whether Mayfield has retained an attorney.

The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. at a home in Dallas, only hours after Mayfield and South Oak Cliff High School captured the 2025 UIL Class 5A Division II state title with a victory over Dr. Thomas E. Randle High School at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by Fox 4, Mayfield was in a bedroom with the victim and another teammate reviewing photos from the championship game earlier that day. As one teammate walked out of the room, he saw Mayfield “swinging the rifle used in the offense” and then heard a single gunshot.

The affidavit states the victim was struck in the neck by an AR-15-style rifle that Mayfield was holding.

Authorities say Mayfield admitted to firing the weapon. He told investigators he initially attempted to drive the victim to the hospital himself but called 911 after realizing the victim was bleeding heavily.

The condition of the victim has not been publicly released.
