Aiyedatiwa Approves Recruitment Of 500 New Amotekun Officers

News Investigators/ Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa says he has approved the recruitment and training of 500 additional officers for the Ondo State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun.

Mr Aiyedatiwa announced this on Friday in Akure during the inauguration of 130 newly appointed Justices of the Peace (JPs), the first set to be appointed in the state since 2008.

The governor said the recruitment was part of efforts to strengthen the state’s security architecture and support ongoing reforms in the justice sector.

He said the revival of the JP office was in line with the ‘Order, Security and Rule of Law’ pillar of his administration’s agenda.

Mr Aiyedatiwa urged the new appointees to promote peace, fairness and justice in their communities, noting that the office required integrity and discipline.

He said the state had also recruited more state counsel and was expanding existing judicial facilities.

The governor said a new Judiciary Complex was nearing completion.

“The office of the Justice of the Peace is not only a title but a sacred responsibility, a bridge between our justice system and the everyday lives of our citizens.

“I must say your appointment carries so much significance. Each of you stands on the threshold of a crucial role that embodies the essence of our democracy.

“As Justices of the Peace, you have a duty to promote fairness while resolving disputes and contributing positively to the overall well-being of our society.

“Your influence will extend beyond your immediate community and your commitment to justice will leave an indelible mark on the lives you touch.

“As an administration, we are committed to fostering a society where justice prevails and every citizen feels safe, valued and heard, “he said.

In his remarks, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, said the JP system, introduced during the colonial era, remained an important link between government and local communities.

Mr Ajulo said appointees were selected based on merit, integrity and moral standing, adding that the office carried statutory powers under Section 12 of the Magistrates’ Court Law to preserve peace and address minor disputes.

The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olusegun Odusola, represented by Justice Akintan Osadebe, administered the oath on the new appointees.

Justice Odusola said JPs perform legal and quasi-judicial functions, including mediating disputes, maintaining public order, administering oaths, and visiting detention centres to assess conditions.

Responding on behalf of the appointees, Bashorun Seinde Arogbofa thanked the state government for the opportunity and pledged their commitment to promoting justice and community development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that those appointed include the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji; traditional rulers, heads of security agencies, diplomats, religious leaders and professionals from various fields.
