NHS worker jailed after s3xually ass@ulting patients in fake examinations

An NHS healthcare worker has been sentenced to nine years in prison after s3xually ass@ulting two patients during fake medical examinations carried out for his own gratification.

Ieuan Crump, 26, committed the offences while working at the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran. Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard that he subjected the women to phoney and entirely unnecessary examinations while they were in pain and at their most vulnerable.

Crump, of Gilfach, Caerphilly, denied the allegations but was found guilty by a jury of nine counts of s3xual ass@ult, including three counts of ass@ult by penetration.

The offences took place in August 2021 while Crump was conducting scans and examinations as part of his role as a healthcare support worker.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, one woman described the lasting trauma she has endured since the attacks.

“The main emotional effect of the s3xual ass@ults has been the negative effect on my mental health,” she said.

“I felt there was no way to escape the intrusive thoughts of what he did to me, which led me to try to take my life on three occasions.

“I just wanted my life to be over, so I didn’t have to relive what was in my head, of what Ieuan did to me. I feel very uncomfortable when I am treated by anyone in the medical profession, as I now trust no one, least of all medics.

“I have been living in a nightmare since this time… I feel like I’m a shell of the person that I used to be.”

Another victim told the court that Crump’s actions left her fearful and distrustful.

“It has made me think that, if a healthcare worker can commit such an act, then any man is a threat. I do not want to be treated by the NHS or go back to the Grange,” she said.

Prosecutor Matthew Roberts described the crimes as an extreme abuse of trust, saying Crump deliberately targeted young, vulnerable women who were in significant pain and under the influence of strong medication.

“This was the most egregious, grotesque abuse of trust by somebody in a position of responsibility,” he said.

Defending, Marian Lewis said Crump had previously volunteered with St John Ambulance and supported his community before committing the offences.

Sentencing Crump, Judge Vanessa Francis said the case involved a breach of trust of the most serious kind.

“You manipulated extremely vulnerable women, in significant amounts of pain,” she said.

She added that Crump carried out intimate examinations that were not required, did not wear gloves because he wanted “skin to skin” contact, and caused devastating harm to both victims.

“Both young women involved in the treatment that you meted out have been utterly devastated by what you did to them,” the judge said.

Crump was jailed for nine years and ordered to serve at least two thirds of the sentence in custody. He was also placed on the s3x offenders register for life, banned from working with children and vulnerable people, and made subject to restraining orders preventing contact with his victims.

Speaking after the sentencing, Crown Prosecution Service lawyer Michael Jenkin said, “Ieuan Crump exploited his position of power over two women when they were at their most vulnerable, for his own s3xual gratification.

“His actions were an extreme breach of trust which was calculated and deliberate. The courage shown by the two women in giving their evidence to the jury allowed the Crown Prosecution Service to present a strong case, resulting in these convictions.”
