‘Lovebirds’ Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry make debut as a couple

Katy Perry and Canada’s former prime minister made their first public appearance as a couple to celebrate the pop star’s 41st birthday this weekend in Paris.

“The lovebirds” took in a cabaret show at the Crazy Horse Paris and were photographed by TMZ exiting the venue holding hands and smiling.

Trudeau was in an all-black suit, while the I Kissed a Girl hitmaker wore a figure-hugging, full-length red dress, beaming as she accepted a rose from a fan outside.

“Of course, Katy and Justin looked absolutely stunning together and appeared to be happier than clams,” the website reported.

“Most excellent. She’s been to space; and he lives there,” one person wrote about the new relationship, while another noted Trudeau’s unpopularity in Canada by writing, Perry “picked the wrong guy to boost her image…”

‘They have an easy connection’

Dating rumours first started to swirl around Trudeau and Perry, who separated from actor Orlando Bloom last summer, after the pair were spotted dining out at Montreal’s Le Violon in July.

Shortly afterward, photos and videos shared to social media showed Trudeau dancing and singing at Perry’s concert at Montreal’s Bell Centre alongside his 16-year-old daughter, Ella-Grace.

In one video, Trudeau was seen belting out the lyrics to Perry’s 2013 hit, Dark Horse.

A source told PEOPLE in August that Trudeau and Perry “are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes.”

“She is travelling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common … Both are idealists and still live in a world where they think they can make improvements, although it has gotten more difficult,” they said.

The pair were then photographed in late September hugging and kissing aboard Perry’s yacht.

In a series of photos published by the Daily Mail earlier this month, Perry was seen in a black one-piece with Trudeau, 53, going shirtless in a pair of jeans as they nuzzled into one another and kissed aboard her 24-metre yacht, the Caravelle.

“She pulled up her boat next to a small public whale-watching boat, then they started making out. I didn’t realize who she was with until I saw the tattoo on the guy’s arm and I immediately realized it was Justin Trudeau,” one eyewitness told the outlet.

After the pics went viral, a source close to the pop star told PEOPLE that Trudeau had been “pursuing her since” that first outing.

“He even flew to California to see her during a tour break,” the insider said. “They have an easy connection. She finds him attractive. He’s been very respectful.”

‘Bit of a midlife crisis’

With his 18-year marriage to Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau a distant memory, one source speculated to Page Six that the former drama teacher and father of three might be going through a “midlife crisis” as he romances Perry.

“He’s free from the ties of office and his marriage,” the insider said. “Dating Katy may just be Justin’s answer to going to Burning Man. It’s a bit of a midlife crisis.”

Another person in the know told the outlet that Trudeau felt “straitjacketed with his duties” during his time in politics.

Another source predicted the relationship could turn Trudeau and Perry into the next Hollywood power couple.

“They both need a boost and it may be a mutually beneficial thing,” the confidante says, pointing to their friendship with other high-profile couples, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez.

“I don’t think anyone that knows him is surprised that Justin would date someone famous,” the source adds. “It does echo his father. It’s in his DNA to do this.”

Before marrying Justin’s mother Margaret, Trudeau’s dad, Pierre, romanced singer Barbra Streisand in the 1960s.

The former prime minister also dated Canadian actresses Kim Cattrall and Margot Kidder, and Canadian classical guitarist Liona Boyd.

Perry, who shares five-year-old daughter Daisy Dove with Bloom, alluded to the burgeoning relationship earlier this month when a fan tried to propose to her onstage in London.

“I wish you’d asked me 48 hours ago,” the 13-time Grammy nominee quipped, seemingly in reference to the publishing of the PDA photos by the Daily Mail.

With Trudeau’s new love interest making headlines, his ex shared a cryptic message about “letting go” with her 371,000 Instagram followers.

“Sometimes we forget that nothing we love is ever meant to be kept,” Gregoire-Trudeau said in an post. “People, places, moments — they’re all meant to be lived, not possessed.”
