Betting ban: When in October will Maduka Okoye return for Nigeria and Udinese?

Soccer

In July, Nigerian international goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was hit with a two-month suspension after being found guilty of illegal betting by Italian football authorities, Soccernet.ng reports.

The case revolved around Udinese’s Serie A clash with Lazio on March 11, 2024, when Okoye picked up a yellow card for time-wasting in the 64th minute with his side leading 2-1.

Unusual betting patterns linked to his caution raised red flags.

Wagers predicting Okoye would be booked, many placed at 8/1 odds in the Udine area, triggered suspicions after returning more than €120,000 in winnings.

Following a lengthy investigation, Italy’s disciplinary commission in June 2025 found Okoye guilty of illegal betting, sparing him a harsher charge of sporting fraud that might have cost him four years of his career.

The two-month ban officially kicked in on August 18, 2025, coinciding with Udinese’s Coppa Italia opener against Carrarese.

Soccer Counting down to Maduka Okoye’s return

Since the suspension began, Okoye has already sat out seven matches across league and cup: Udinese’s Coppa Italia wins over Carrarese and Palermo, plus Serie A fixtures against Verona, Inter Milan, Pisa, AC Milan, and Sassuolo.

In that period, Udinese managed four wins, two defeats, and one draw, scoring nine and conceding nine.

The final fixture he is forced to miss is Udinese vs Cagliari on October 5. After that, the club resumes action against Cremonese on October 20, when Okoye will once again be eligible for selection.

Udinese then close out the month with meetings against Lecce (Oct 25) and Juventus (Oct 29).

While the Nigeria international could technically make his return as early as Cremonese away, the more likely scenario is his season bow coming on December 3 in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 against Juventus.

Soccer What about Nigeria?

Okoye’s absence hasn’t only been felt at club level.

The 24-year-old missed Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa in September. The former Warford man will also sit out the decisive clashes against Lesotho on October 10 and Benin on October 14, as his suspension will still be in effect.

However, once the calendar flips to November, Okoye will be free to rejoin the national set-up, potentially featuring in friendly fixtures against Venezuela and Colombia.

That timing is crucial, as it gives the Udinese keeper a chance to build form and confidence heading into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in December.

Soccer Why Okoye’s return matters

Okoye’s return comes at a vital moment for Nigeria.

Since Stanley Nwabali cemented his role as first-choice during the last AFCON, Okoye has slipped into the role of deputy. Yet with tournament football demanding squad depth, his presence as an experienced alternative is invaluable.

Nigeria will need competition and cover in goal if they are to mount a serious challenge for the continental title.

For Udinese, the situation is equally pressing.

The club have lacked consistency at the back in his absence, conceding as many as they have scored since his ban began.

Okoye’s shot-stopping ability, distribution, and growing experience in Serie A give manager Kosta Runjaić another dependable option as Udinese look to climb the table and progress in the cup.
