A Finnish MP has taken their own life inside the country’s parliament, local media outlets have reported.
Eemeli Peltonen, 30, was found dead in the building on Tuesday.
Finnish paper Iltalehti said the politician had died at around 11am.
Emergency services including paramedics were reported to have attended the parliament after receiving a call.
An ambulance, two police vehicles and a fire engine attended the scene, broadcaster Yle said.
However, there is said to be no suspicion of foul play.
A security official declined to provide further details, saying: “There is a mission underway, with rescue authorities, police and emergency services on site. I cannot say more than that at this stage.
“I can’t say what the emergency response from the emergency center has been.
“Parliament is a bit of an exceptional site, so one could imagine that such things have been considered when the situation has been unclear.”
He did not deny reports that the cause of death was suicide.
The country’s prime minister, Petteri Orpo, said in a statement that politics would be suspended following the announcement and observed a moment of silence.
He said: “Some time ago, we received truly shocking news from Parliament, our shared workplace.
“One of our colleagues has died in the parliamentary premises. This is very sad news.”
He added: “At the same time, we send strength to the family, loved ones and colleagues. This deeply affects all of us.”
