Roti shop worker gunned down | Local News | trinidadexpress.com

RELATIVES are calling for justice after 31-year-old Jennell Mohipat was shot and killed at her workplace yesterday.

They say Mohipat, who worked at a roti shop along the Southern Main Road, Chase Village, had no enemies and they were unsure why she was targeted.

Around 12.30 p.m. yesterday, a gunman entered the business, located near the Rich Gold Hotel, and shot Mohipat four times, before fleeing. Mohipat died at the scene.

No motive has yet been established for the killing.

When the Express visited the family yesterday, her husband, Keron Carthy, 35, said his wife began working at the roti shop two weeks ago.

“They say she was serving food to customers. One man, with cane rows, come in with a Jay Cloth over his face and he shoot she and she bawl out. Then he continued shooting she,” he said.

He said while the owner of the business and customers were also present, the shooter fired only at his wife.

Carthy, who works on Church Street, Chase Village, where the couple lives, said he heard the gunshots, but didn’t realise it was his wife who had been shot.

“My wife involved in nothing. She is not that kind of person. She in the house right through, she doesn’t come out. She is really from Gasparillo. She living here for six years now,” he added.

He said the brazen daylight shooting has shocked the community.

“This kind of thing doesn’t happen here in our community. You would hear it happening in Chaguanas and thing, but not in Chase Village,” he added.

He made an appeal for the case to be solved swiftly.

“We want justice. Police say they are investigating the case. My wife didn’t have no grudge with anybody. To say she had enemies to kill her and she had to watch her back—no.

“She was a joyful person, full of life. She would give her last to people. She always liked to help people,” he said.

He said an autopsy would be done today at the Forensic Science Centre, Federation Park.

Mohipat’s killing takes the murder toll for the year to 261, compared to 440 for the same period last year.
