Willmott Dixon has been appointed preferred contractor for the redevelopment of the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Brighton.

Brighton & Hove City Council has earmarked up to £65m for the scheme, which will replace the existing ageing facility with a modern complex on the same seafront site.

Plans include a larger fitness suite, two swimming pools, a family entertainment zone, and improved accessibility. The building will offer sea views from the pools, gym and café, and feature landscaping to improve the surrounding public realm.

The scheme is being delivered through the UK Leisure Framework. The council’s main delivery partner, Alliance Leisure, is leading the project alongside GT3 Architects.

Willmott Dixon managing director for construction south Richard Poulter said the scheme offered “an exciting opportunity” to create a facility that capitalises on its coastal location, adding that the contractor had delivered more than 160 leisure centres nationally.

The scheme remains subject to council approval. A scrutiny committee will review the proposals on 22 September, with cabinet expected to consider the plans three days later.

A planning application is due to be submitted by the end of the year. Work is not expected to begin on site before early 2026, with completion likely in spring 2028.

Funding will be sourced through government grants, council borrowing, and the sale of part of the site for housing. Public consultations on the design and facility mix will begin later this autumn.

Brighton & Hove City Council said the existing King Alfred Leisure Centre would remain operational for as long as feasible.
