West Indies youths level ODI series with Sri Lanka | Local Sports | trinidadexpress.com

Captain Joshua Dorne, aided by Shaquan Belle and Brendan Boodoo guided the West Indies Under-19 cricket team to a series-levelling two-wicket victory over their Sri Lankan counterparts in the fourth match of their Youth One-Day International series, yesterday.

The victory at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua was achieved under the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method.

Asked to chase 182 for victory, the WI Under-19s reached 167 for eight in 34.4 overs. Belle guided his side to the target with an unbeaten 41 off 31 balls.

Earlier, skipper Dorne and Boodoo had laid a platform for the win with a fifth wicket partnership of 76, before Trinidad and Tobago player Boodoo was stumped off the bowling of Kugathas Mathulan for 34 to leave the WI total on 98 for five. Dorne was next to go two runs later (100 for six) for an even 50, which included six fours and a six. Belle’s brisk knock then ensured the home team got to their DLS target.

In the first half of the match, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 182 with ten-and-a-half of their allotted overs remaining. This was after Dorne had won the toss and invited them to take first strike.

Openers Dimantha Mahavithana (34) and Viran Chamuditha (24), gave their team a sedate start, putting on 48 for the first wicket in 10.4 overs before they were dismissed by Isra-el Morton and Belle respectively. By the time Mahavithana left, Sri Lanka had got up to 78 for two, the opener having added a further 30 with Senuja Wekunagoda (17). But despite captain Vimath Dinsara (22) and Chamika Heenatigala (21) getting into the 20s, the Sri Lanka innings went into decline.

Belle finished with the best figures of four for 35, while there were two wickets apiece for Zachary Carter and Boodoo. Belle then completed his excellent match by seeing West Indies over the line to level the seven-match series at 2-2. The fifth game is scheduled for tomorrow at Coolidge.

Summarised scores:

SRI LANKA U19s 182, 39.3 overs (Dimantha Mahavithana 34, Viran Chamuditha 24, Vimath Vinsara 22, Chamika Heenatigala 21, Senuja Wekunagoda 17, Adam Hilmy 16, Kavija Gamage 15; Shaquan Belle 4/35, Brendan Boodoo 2/1, Zachary Carter 2/34) vs WEST INDIES U19s 167-8, 34.4 overs (Joshua Dorne 50, Shaquan Belle 41 n.o., Brendan Boodoo 34, Jonathan Van Lange 23; Sethmika Seneviratne 2/22, Kugathas Mathulan 2/45) —WI Under-19s won by two wickets on DLS method.
