Odisha’s canoeing player Rasmita Sahoo finds special mention in PM Modi’s Mann Ki Baat

Rasmita Sahoo, a canoeing player from Odisha, found special mention in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 125th edition of his radio address ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday. PM Modi interacted with her while speaking about the recently held Khelo India Water Sports Festival.

During the conversation, Rasmita shared her inspiring journey from a small village in Odisha to becoming a decorated canoeing athlete.

“I started canoeing in 2017 and have participated in several National Championships and National Games. So far, I have won 41 medals, including 13 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze,” she said.

Narrating how she was introduced to the sport, Rasmita recalled that her village had no sports facilities. “Boating used to take place in a nearby river. One day, while swimming with friends, I saw a canoeing-kayaking boat. I found it very interesting and immediately told my father that I wanted to join this sport,” she added.

PM Modi praised young athletes like Rasmita for their passion and determination, saying that they are scripting a new chapter in India’s sports journey.

What is Canoeing?

Canoeing is a water sport where athletes paddle a narrow boat called a canoe using a single-bladed paddle. It can be done on rivers, lakes, or the sea for recreation or competition.

There are two main types- sprint canoeing, which focuses on speed over short distances in calm water, and slalom canoeing, where paddlers navigate through gates on a fast-flowing river. Canoeing can be done solo or in teams, requiring balance, strength, and coordination.

Canoeing in India is a growing water sport managed by the Indian Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ICKA). It includes canoe sprint and canoe slalom, both recognised in national and international competitions. The sport is mainly popular in states with good water bodies like Kerala, Odisha, Assam, and Maharashtra.
