  • Forward works set to start on Tom Price Health Service redevelopment
  • Cooper & Oxley has been awarded the forward works contract
  • The upgraded hospital will deliver modern healthcare closer to home for the Pilbara community

Work is set to begin shortly on the redevelopment of the Tom Price Health Service with the forward works contract awarded to Western Australian company Cooper & Oxley.

The early works will prepare the site for major construction and includes earthworks, new access roads and flood mitigation measures to ensure the hospital meets updated climate resilience standards.

The new purpose-built facility will feature a modern emergency department, contemporary primary care facilities including multipurpose consult and interview rooms, a four-bed inpatient ward, dental and pathology services.

The Cook Government is delivering the nearly $33 million project in partnership with Rio Tinto, which has contributed $20 million.

Major construction of the Tom Price Health Service is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026.

As stated by Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:

“The awarding of the forward works contract is a major step forward in delivering this important project, which will improve access to healthcare for the Tom Price community.

“This demonstrates the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to upgrading health facilities across regional Western Australia, overcoming constraints in the hospital construction sector.

“It is great to see a WA-company awarded the contract to progress this important redevelopment.”

As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

“It is great to see this transformative project get underway which is set to deliver modern, fit-for-purpose medical facilities for the Tom Price community and the residents of its surrounding towns.

“This redevelopment project is delivering on our government’s commitment to ensuring all Western Australians have access to the healthcare they need.

“By collaborating with Rio Tinto and the Shire of Ashburton, we’re investing in the future of Tom Price, providing the critical medical facilities needed to support this growing community’s health and wellbeing in the decades to come.”

As stated by Pilbara Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“The Cook Government is committed to delivering a modern health service for the Tom Price community and I am delighted that forward works are set to begin to realise this promise.

“Hospital construction in regional areas such as the Pilbara is challenging, but these challenges have been overcome to ensure the provision of health services that meet the needs of the community well into the future.”

As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

“Work is set to begin on the redevelopment of the Tom Price Health Service – a major milestone in delivering this vital project for the Tom Price community and surrounding areas.

“These upgrades will bring the facility into the future, ensuring it can continue to provide high-quality healthcare services to the region for generations to come.

“I’m pleased to see the Cook Government moving ahead with its commitment to investing in modern, fit-for-purpose health infrastructure in regional WA. It will be exciting to see this transformative project begin to take shape.

“It’s also great to see a WA contractor, Cooper & Oxley, awarded the forward works contract, supporting local jobs and expertise as we build the infrastructure our communities need.”
