On Thursday, August 21, 2025, Councilmember Eugene Green and the City of New Orleans will hold a day of celebration honoring the extraordinary football career of New Orleans native and Saints safety, Tyrann Mathieu. Mathieu announced his retirement from the NFL on July 22, 2025, after an incredible 12-season career.

At 12:30 p.m., Mathieu will be presented a Key to the City in recognition of his outstanding contributions on and off the field for the New Orleans community. Immediately following, Councilmember Green and the New Orleans City Council will present special accommodations to Mathieu during a special order of business at their regularly scheduled City Council meeting at 1:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Mathieu attended St. Augustine High School, earning national recognition as a four-star recruit where he was ranked the No. 13 cornerback in the nation in 2010. He then attended LSU, where as a member of the Tigers, Mathieu was awarded the Chuck Bednarik Award, named SEC Defensive Player of the Year, earned All-American and First-Team All-SEC honors and was chosen as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2011.

Mathieu was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round (69th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent the 2018 season with the Houston Texans, before joining the Kansas City Chiefs and winning Super Bowl LIV with them. In 2022, Mathieu returned home to sign with the Saints.

During his incredible NFL career, Mathieu was named to the PWFA All-Rookie team (2013), earned three First-Team All-Pro selections (2015, 2019, 2020) and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2015, 2020 and 2021. He was also named to the NFL 2010 All-Decade Team.
