In brief: The latest on the situation in the Middle East

By Cassandra Morgan

Thank you for joining us today as we covered the rapidly developing conflict between Israel and Iran. We will have more for you soon in another coverage of live news.

Here’s a quick overview of the latest developments:

  • Iran and Israel ramped up their missile attacks as the world waited to see what action US President Donald Trump would take after he left the G7 summit early because of intensifying hostilities in the Middle East.
  • Trump signed a statement from G7 leaders calling for a de-escalation in hostilities. The statement condemned Iran as the “principal source of regional instability and terror”, and declared that the world would not allow the country to have nuclear weapons. It also reiterated G7 support for Israel’s ability to defend itself.
  • Israel’s military announced it had killed Ali Shadmani – the man Israel claimed was Iran’s wartime chief of staff and the country’s most senior military commander.
  • Meanwhile, in Gaza, more than 50 people were reported killed by Israeli tank shellfire after they tried to get aid from trucks in Khan Younis.
  • You can catch up with everything we know about the Israel and Iran conflict on our regularly updated “what we know so far” page.

We’ll be back on Wednesday with more coverage of the crisis in the Middle East.

‘Direct impacts’ on underground nuclear enrichment halls

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) believes Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s Natanz enrichment site have had “direct impacts” on the facility’s underground centrifuge halls.

It marks the first time the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog has assessed damage from the strikes in the underground parts of Natanz, which is the main enrichment facility of Iran’s nuclear program.

“Based on continued analysis of high-resolution satellite imagery collected after Friday’s attacks, the IAEA has identified additional elements that indicate direct impacts on the underground enrichment halls at Natanz,” the agency said.

Already, an above-ground enrichment hall had been destroyed, as well as electrical equipment that powered the facility.

Israel threatens strikes on ‘very significant targets’

Israel says it’s planning to strike “very significant targets” in Iran, according to Iran International, a Persian-language TV station.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said an evacuation warning would be issued ahead of the strikes.

He was quoted as saying Israel was on track to destroy more than 10 nuclear-related targets in Tehran.

Iranian missiles reportedly strike Mossad agency

Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency headquarters have been struck by missiles, Iranian state-operated media is reporting.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the military intelligence centre was struck despite “the presence of highly advanced defence systems”, the Tasnim news agency said.

Israel is yet to comment on the alleged strike.

The key powerbrokers Israel has assassinated

By Tom Housden and Matthew Absalom-Wong

Israel’s attack on Iran has struck a devastating blow to the country’s senior military and nuclear powerbrokers.

A string of generals has been killed in the drone and airstrikes that began on Friday, including the chiefs of the armed forces and the elite Revolutionary Guard, and the top scientists running Iran’s secretive nuclear program.

There are also reports that covert Israeli intelligence units orchestrated the assassinations from within Iran itself.

Israel not interested in mediation, claims Kremlin

The Kremlin claims Israel does not want mediation efforts over its conflict with Iran, which is in its fifth day amid what Moscow described as a “galloping escalation”.

Israel launched its air war with a surprise attack on Friday that has killed nearly the entire top echelon of Iran’s military commanders and its leading nuclear scientists. Iran has responded with a barrage of strikes on Israeli cities.

In a call with reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called on both sides to exercise “maximum restraint”.

“The situation is continuing to escalate rapidly. The level of unpredictability is absolute,” he said.

Peskov said Russia’s offer to mediate between the warring sides still stood, but he said Israel was for now not interested in seeking a peaceful solution.

Russia signed a strategic partnership treaty with Iran in January, but the pact does not include a mutual defence clause. It also has longstanding ties with Israel, though these have been strained by the war in Ukraine and Israel’s bombing of Gaza.

Peskov said the Russian embassy in Tehran was co-ordinating with Russian citizens and providing them with opportunities to evacuate Iran via neighbouring Azerbaijan.

‘A complete give-up’: Watch Trump address reporters

As we reported earlier, US President Donald Trump spoke to reporters en route to Washington on Air Force One, after cutting his G7 summit trip short.

The president said he wanted “better than a ceasefire” between Israel and Iran, and rather, a “real end”.

“A complete give-up – that’s possible,” Trump said.

You can watch a clip of what he had to say below.

Israel says it’s reviewing reports of Gaza aid casualties

Israel’s military says it is aware of reports of Palestinian casualties as people waited for aid in the southern Gaza Strip.

As we reported earlier, Gaza’s health ministry said Israeli tank shellfire had killed dozens of Palestinians as they waited for aid trucks in Khan Younis and more were wounded.

Palestinians mourn during the funeral of Reem al-Akhras, who was killed while heading to an aid distribution hub, in Khan Younis earlier this month.

The Israel Defence Forces said in a statement provided to the BBC that a “gathering was identified adjacent to an aid distribution truck that got stuck” in Khan Younis near its troops.

“The IDF is aware of reports regarding a number of injured individuals from IDF fire following the crowd’s approach. The details of the incident are under review,” it said, as reported by the BBC.

“[The IDF] regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals and operates to minimise harm as much as possible to them while maintaining the safety of our troops”.

Israel reportedly targets western Iran

Israel is targeting western Iran, according to media reports.

Israeli media claims the new wave of strikes is aimed at Iranian regime military sites.

We’re waiting for more information.

Trump denies Iran peace talks ‘in any way, shape, or form’

US President Donald Trump has reiterated he has not reached out to Iran for peace talks, “in any way, shape, or form”.

This is what Trump posted to his social media platform, Truth Social:

I have not reached out to Iran for “Peace Talks” in any way, shape, or form. This is just more HIGHLY FABRICATED, FAKE NEWS! If they want to talk, they know how to reach me. They should have taken the deal that was on the table – Would have saved a lot of lives!!!”
