FACT CHECK: Has Taiwo Awoniyi signed a contract extension at Nottingham Forest?

Soccer

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi just came off his third season with English Premier League club Nottingham Forest after joining them from Union Berlin in 2022, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old striker joined the club after an impressive stint in Germany. His time at the club has been tough, as he has had some high moments and a lot of lows.

Awoniyi helped the Tricky Trees survive relegation in his first season, but he has not done much at the club due to injuries.

Last season, he was relegated to being a bench warmer. During one of Awoniyi’s injury spells, Chris Wood took over his place as the first-choice striker and shone incredibly.

The New Zealand marksman contributed 20 goals and three assists in 36 Premier League games to help Nottingham Forest to an unprecedented seventh-place finish.

Awoniyi ended the campaign on a low, as he had to undergo surgery after rupturing his intestine in a nasty collision in Forest’s 35th game of the season.

Meanwhile, there have been reports from sections of the media that Awoniyi has signed a contract extension at Nottingham Forest that will keep him at the club until 2028

However Soccernet.ng can confirm that those reports are false. Awoniyi’s current contract will expire in 2027, and Nottingham Forest have not initiated serious talks with the Super Eagles star for an extension yet.

Moreover, Awoniyi is in danger of losing at the club if Nottingham Forest bring in a new striker in the summer.

The Super Eagles striker is back and fully fit. He will look to put his injury problems behind him and reclaim his place as the first-choice striker at Forest.
