Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has to be one of our games of the year – and 33 days after release it’s sold 3.3 million copies. The news of the French turn-based RPG’s success was revealed by creator Sandfall Interactive across social media today, which not so coincidentally, is exactly 33 days since the games launch.
We’re not ones to harp on about destiny and divine rights, but even we think there’s something poetic about a game whose central premise is tied to that number hitting 3.3 million sales.

Expedition 33 Sells 3.3 Million Copies 33 Days Since Launch
As per the developer, Sandfall Interactive, the game sold 3.3 million copies as of May 27. That’s 33 days since April 24, the full launch of the game. Since then the game sold 2 million copies in its first two weeks, before slowing in sales. Now, just under five weeks since then, that number has risen to 3.3 million (that’s triple platinum in old lingo).
The game’s success has brought to light the unique way in which the game was made. A relatively small core group, with freelancers, and nothing approaching a AAA-style production team. The composer of the game’s music, Lorien Testard, for example, was a complete unknown, but has produced one of the most compelling soundtracks of recent memory.
Beyond just a thank you and acknowledgment, the Expedition 33 team has celebrated the 33rd day since release with a new music video release, showcasing the mo-cap actress of Maelle performing alongside her iconic theme. As mentioned, the game’s soundtrack has received pretty universal acclaim, and fans are clamouring for anything related to it.
Still, it appears It’s win after win for the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developers. Even though minor controversy was kicked up after director Guillaume Broche said he was most proud of receiving praise in Japan over any other country, the developers as a whole have just continued to rack up positive press.
If the sales continue and memories last, Expedition 33 will likely have a clear sweep at this year’s industry awards.
