Wates Construction has been appointed to deliver a £14.8m rapid deployment cell (RDC) scheme at HMP Albany on the Isle of Wight under a call-off from the Ministry of Justice’s £2.5bn Constructor Services Framework.
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) awarded the contract yesterday (25 June).
Wates is conducting the two-stage design-and-build job under the PPC2000 (Amended 2013) form of contract.
Work began on 13 March 2025 and is scheduled to complete by 30 June 2026.
The scheme will deliver single-occupancy, containerised cell units configured as single or double-storey blocks, the MoJ said.
These will be linked to ancillary accommodation including offices, storage, kitchens, serveries, association spaces and laundry facilities. Each unit will be equipped with fixed furniture.
Wates is conducting design and pre-construction surveys in the first stage of the contract, valued at £545,602.
The main works include foundations, hardstanding, lead-in services for water and power, and final connections including drainage, fire alarms and in-cell telephony.
The original cost estimate was produced by the Ministry of Justice and its cost consultants based on desktop and non-intrusive surveys.
