Southampton: Despite bigger offer, Onuachu chooses Trabzonspor – deal complete

Soccer

Southampton and Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu is on the verge of completing a dazzling return to Turkish giants Trabzonspor, Soccernet.ng reports.

It’s been a wild goose chase in the transfer market for both the Turkish and English clubs as they attempt to lure the towering striker back to Papara Park after his impressive stint.

The latest report suggests that the now-EFL Championship contenders have finally reached an agreement with the club for his permanent transfer.

The latest update was disclosed by Nigerian journalist Buchi Laba, who revealed that the deal is now 100% complete, with Onuachu expected in Turkey this weekend for his medicals and contract signing.

“Final agreement has officially been reached between Southampton and Trabzonspor for the transfer of the Nigerian international. Paul Onuachu picked Trabzonspor, forcing Southampton to accept the bid after many ups and downs.” Laba wrote on his X (formerly Twitter).

Laba further disclosed that Southampton initially stalled on the deal, having received a more lucrative offer from an unnamed Belgian club.

The bid was nearly accepted until Onuachu made it clear that he only wanted Trabzonspor, forcing the Saints to reconsider and eventually sign off on the deal.

Soccer Why Trabzonspor Wants Onuachu?

The 31-year-old Nigerian forward, who spent the last two seasons on loan at Trabzonspor, was also courted by clubs in Belgium and England.

During his time with the Black Sea Storm, the Nigerian international revived his scoring touch with 17 goals and four assists in 25 appearances for the club.

However, he snubbed all other suitors in favour of a return to Turkey, where he enjoyed regular playing time and resurrected his scoring form.

Onuachu was close to returning to Trabzonspor last season but was convinced to stay at St Mary’s. That decision didn’t pan out as hoped, with the striker struggling for goals—scoring four goals in 28 matches for the saints.

Soccer What’s Next for Onuachu?

The Nigerian is expected to have his medicals this weekend, and an announcement is to be made by the Turkish side over the completion of the deal after a tough time in the market.

For Onuachu, if the deal finally materializes, he will be hoping to continue from where he left off at the club, and also join other Nigerian players plying their trade in the league.
