NEMA Threatens to Close Multi-million Shilling Company in Ongoing Crackdown

A poultry processing farm in Naivasha has been directed to stop dumping untreated water waste in the environment by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) or face consequences.

In a statement on Wednesday, April 23, NEMA announced that the facility had been discharging this waste without an Effluent Discharge Licence (EDL).

The facility was thus ordered to stop further discharge of the waste and put in place measures to contain all solid waste generated by the facility within seven days.

At the site, the NEMA officers observed poor management of solid waste manure from the processing factory and the absence of an Environmental Impact  Assessment (EIA) or Environmental Audit (EA).

“During inspection, there were no records of Environmental Impact  Assessment (EIA) or Environmental Audit (EA) for the facility. There was also evidence of poor management of solid waste manure from the facility,” part of the statement read.

“They were ordered to stop further discharges and put in place measures to contain all solid waste generated by the facility within seven days.”

They were also urged to report the compliance to the NEMA Naivasha Sub-county office.

This notice comes just a week after NEMA ordered the immediate closure of the popular Northern Bypass club Habanos Lounge after repeated noise complaints from neighbours.

“NEMA yesterday issued a Closure Order to Habanos Lounge, located along Northern Bypass, following persistent noise complaints from neighbours and failure by the club to adhere to previous orders to control noise pollution. The orders are to take effect immediately,” read the statement.

In another notice on Wednesday, April 23, the authority reported the arrest of a trader who was caught with 63 banned plastic flatbacks in Makindu.

The man was arrested while selling the plastic bags to members of the public and is currently being processed for arraignment at Makindu Law Courts on Thursday, April 24.

“NEMA Makueni County Officers, supported by the National Police Service (NPS), today arrested a trader in Makindu market in the act of selling 63 banned plastic flat bags to members of the public. The trader is being processed for arraignment at Makindu Law Courts tomorrow for the offence,” the notice read.
