Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal take clear Victor Osimhen stand with first official bid for 54-goal striker

Arsenal have made their first decisive move in the transfer market this summer, officially launching a bid for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, Soccernet.ng reports.

The move for Gyokeres flashes a clear signal that the Gunners have turned their focus away from long-linked targets Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko.

Mikel Arteta is determined to add a prolific centre-forward to his squad, aiming to solve the last piece of Arsenal’s puzzle after three consecutive second-place finishes in the Premier League.

While several names have been touted, including Napoli’s Osimhen and RB Leipzig’s Sesko, it is Gyokeres who has emerged as the Gunners’ top priority.

Portuguese outlet A Bola via TMW reports that Arsenal sent a formal offer to Sporting for Gyokeres in recent days. The package is believed to be worth €55 million plus €10 million in performance-related bonuses — below the €60 million + €10 million valuation Sporting president Frederico Varandas previously declared as the minimum starting point for negotiations.

The Portuguese club reportedly rejected Arsenal’s opening proposal but remains open to further talks. Sporting have internally discussed the offer, and while it was turned down, sources close to the deal insist Arsenal are prepared to return with an improved bid.

The 27-year-old Sweden international has been in sensational form, scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions last season. His clinical performances have caught the eye of top European clubs, but Arsenal appear to be the most aggressive suitor.

Should negotiations with Sporting collapse, Arsenal are expected to pivot quickly to Sesko, who remains high on their list.

Victor Osimhen still wanted in England?

Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen, who spent last season on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, may still realise his Premier League dream — albeit not with Arsenal.

According to Givemesport, Liverpool have expressed interest in the Nigerian forward as they look to bolster their attack under new manager Arne Slot.

Osimhen enjoyed a phenomenal campaign in Turkey, scoring 37 goals and providing 8 assists in 41 appearances.

With Liverpool seeking to build a side capable of challenging for both domestic and European honours, the 26-year-old’s dynamic style could offer the perfect addition.

Though no formal negotiations have yet taken place between Liverpool and Napoli, talks are expected to begin soon. For Osimhen, the Premier League door may not have closed — it might just be opening somewhere else.
