Nigeria’s Super Eagles shatter Russia’s six-year attendance record

Soccer

Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia in an international friendly may have been a tale of tactical resilience, but it also marked a significant moment off the pitch — a record-breaking attendance, Soccernet.ng reports.

According to the Russian Football Union, 45,638 fans were in attendance at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium — the highest crowd for a Russian home game in six years.

Not since the Euro 2020 qualifier against Belgium in November 2019, which drew 53,317 to the Gazprom Arena in St. Petersburg, has a Russian match seen such numbers.

The atmosphere inside Luzhniki was electric, with fans treated to a pre-match carnival complete with fireworks, parades, and live musical performances — creating a festival-like ambience reminiscent of an international tournament opening ceremony.

This was Russia’s first match at the iconic Luzhniki Stadium since September 2021, when they faced Croatia in a World Cup qualifier. The return was marked by a highly competitive contest, with both sides showing flashes of attacking quality and defensive grit.

Nigeria hold Russia to thrilling draw

Russia took the lead in the 27th minute when Nigerian centre-back Semi Ajayi inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

But the Super Eagles clawed their way back into the game thanks to Tolu Arokodare, who found the equaliser in the 71st minute with a well-taken finish.

Despite Russia dominating possession with 58% to Nigeria’s 42%, the Super Eagles were more efficient in front of goal — firing six shots with four on target, compared to Russia’s 10 attempts, of which only two troubled the goalkeeper.

Statistically, Russia completed 497 passes at 87% accuracy, while the Super Eagles registered 367 passes at 81%. The match also saw its fair share of physicality, with the hosts committing 16 fouls and picking up three yellow cards, while Nigeria conceded 11 fouls and received one caution.

Corner kicks were evenly split (4-4), but Nigeria were caught offside three times, more than their European counterparts.

The result means head coach, Eric Chelle, continues his unbeaten start at the helm. Since taking charge, the Malian tactician has guided the Super Eagles to three wins and two draws — a steady beginning that continues to inspire optimism among fans.
