The first full week of the 2025 Major League Baseball season is in the books, and the National League West has been the story thus far.

The Los Angeles Dodgers (8-0) and the San Diego Padres (7-0) are the lone unbeaten teams left in MLB. This is just the fifth season in MLB history in which multiple teams started 7-0 or better, and the first since 2003, per MLB research Sarah Langs. The other years were 2003, 1982, 1962, and 1884.

With the Padres and Dodgers, this is the 5th season where multiple teams started 7-0 or better, joining:

2003 KC 9-0, SF 7-0
1982 ATL 13-0, CHW 8-0
1962 PIT 10-0, STL 7-0
1884 St. Louis Maroons 20-0, New York Gothams 12-0

Just behind the Dodgers and the Padres are the San Francisco Giants (5-1) and Arizona Diamondbacks (4-3) in the powerful NL West division. The Colorado Rockies (1-5) are the lone outlier.

While the NL West has proven to be the powerhouse of the league, the American League Central has been the exact opposite.

All five teams — the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, and Kansas City Royals, and Minnesota Twins — have just two wins through the first week of the year.

The entire AL East has a positive run differential through one week, while the entire AL West has a negative run differential.

Finally, the Atlanta Braves (0-7) are the only winless team after facing both the Dodgers and Padres to open the season.

While it’s way too early to call their season, their struggles combined with the team’s biggest offseason acquisition being suspended for 80 games and becoming ineligible for the postseason hasn’t exactly inspired much confidence. Being in a division with the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies only makes things worse.

With one week officially in the books, here is the first edition of the Newsweek Sports MLB Power Rankings for the 2025 season, starting with the reigning World Series champions and the team many believed to be the second-best team in baseball last year in the top two spots.
