The game was previously set for late 2025

Rockstar Games has delayed Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The publisher announced the new release date in a post to its newswire. The open-world crime game had been set to launch in late 2025 for a while now, with Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive reiterating this release window in February.

That said, people have long speculated that the game wouldn’t make 2025. After all, Rockstar has an unmatched level of attention to detail in its meticulously crafted and ambitious open-world games, resulting in it often delaying games to ensure more time for polishing. Rockstar said as much in its announcement of the GTA VI delay, noting that “we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
Beyond that, we also just haven’t seen much from GTA VI yet. The first and only trailer was revealed in December 2023, confirming dual protagonists and a return to the Miami-inspired Vice City. We still haven’t gotten an actual official gameplay reveal, although rough early footage leaked online in 2022. In its delay announcement, Rockstar says it looks forward to sharing more information on GTA VI “soon.”
Given how massive every GTA entry launch ends up being, it will be interesting to see which other games get release dates during the holiday 2025 window now that they don’t have to compete with GTA VI.
