  • South Korean actor Hwang Jung-eum has admitted to embezzling ₩4.34 billion (around $3.1 million) from her own company to invest in cryptocurrencies
  • Hwang said the funds were used to invest in digital assets to grow the business
  • Her TV appearances and advertising deals have been cut following the scandal

South Korean actor Hwang Jung-eum has confessed in court to embezzling more than ₩4.34 billion ($3 million) from her self-owned agency to invest in cryptocurrencies. Her legal team has claimed the money was used with the hope of expanding the company, but the court has charged her under South Korea’s strict economic crime laws. Public backlash has been swift, and broadcasters and sponsors have already begun distancing themselves after her admission.

Purchases Were Intended to Expand the Company

Appearing at Jeju District Court, Hwang admitted to embezzling ₩4.34 billion from her company’s funds. Her lawyer told the court that the investment was intended to benefit the business but had to be made in her name because the company couldn’t hold digital assets directly. “She made the investment with the intention of growth,” the defence stated, “but accepts responsibility for the way it was handled.”

The defence further argued that since Hwang’s income as an entertainer is the sole revenue for the agency, the boundaries between personal and company funds had been blurred. They also noted that part of the money has already been recovered, and further repayments will be made through property sales.

Scenes Cut From TV Show

The reaction from the entertainment industry has been immediate and negative; SBS Plus announced that Hwang’s appearance in the final episode of Because I’m Single would be cut, and her commentary as an MC minimised. Several advertisers, including Daesang Wellife Nucare, have also pulled her campaign materials.

Hwang issued a public apology through her agency:

I sincerely apologise for causing concern. I made a poor decision in trying to grow the company and take full responsibility.

According to court filings, Hwang has begun repaying the funds and intends to cover the rest through the sale of assets. The court has delayed further proceedings to give her time to make restitution. Another hearing is expected later this year to review progress and determine sentencing.
