Glasner credits Palace´s ´outstanding group´ after record points haul

Soccer

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner praised his “outstanding group” after they backed up Saturday’s FA Cup triumph by passing 50 Premier League points for the first time in their history.

The Eagles beat Wolves 4-2 in an entertaining game at Selhurst Park, Eddie Nketiah’s first-half brace followed up by strikes from Ben Chilwell and substitute Eberechi Eze in the second period.

It cements a historic week for Glasner’s side, who put on a show for a buoyant crowd.

And the proud Austrian is delighted with the mentality demonstrated by his team.

He told BBC Match of the Day: “We didn’t know what we would get, so credit to the players.

“We had great energy on the pitch and that’s not easy after such a huge achievement. It’s an outstanding and incredible group. We trust every single one of the players and everyone has contributed to the success.

“It was a fantastic atmosphere. Everybody shouted my name and I didn’t know what they wanted and someone said I should wave with my hands. It was an amazing experience and a great game.

“There were many things that were not perfect but we demand the effort and that everyone does his job. It’s great that we could raise our personal standards and that’s what makes me proud.”

Nketiah was the game-changer with his two goals before the break, the second of which was his 50th senior career goal.

His two-goal haul tripled his league goal tally for the campaign, but the former Arsenal striker is loving life at Selhurst Park, despite spending much of this season playing second fiddle to Jean-Philippe Mateta.

He said: “We’re buzzing. Our manager was keen to keep it going and to keep the celebrations going. Everyone was firing and we got the win.

“The unity between the fans and the players is amazing, it’s a good place to develop and it will be amazing to have European nights here.

“It’s nice to reach that landmark [50 career goals] and I know I can do much better. It’s a nice way to end the last home game and I want to contribute more next season.”

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira claimed his side made “too many mistakes” after they lost their third consecutive Premier League match, meaning they can finish no higher than 14th.

He told Sky Sports: “We made a lot of mistakes. This team [Palace] is very dangerous in the counter-attack, so if we go inside we know if they get the ball they will create a fast transition.

“When we were in the best moment of the game at 3-2, we had a chance to make it 3-3 two times but another mistake finished the game. I cannot accept that.”
