Tunisia’s Mass Conspiracy Trial Condemned by UN for Violating Fair Trial Standards

The United Nations has sharply criticized the recent mass trial in Tunisia that led to the conviction of nearly 40 opposition figures, describing the process as fundamentally flawed and politically motivated.

According to Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the trial was “marred by violations of fair trial and due process rights,” raising alarm over the erosion of democratic principles in the country. The court had issued severe sentences ranging from 13 to 66 years to the accused, many of whom are known critics of President Kais Saied, including prominent lawyers, business leaders, and political activists—some currently detained, others in exile.

The charges were based on accusations of “conspiracy against state security” and “belonging to a terrorist group.” However, defence attorneys and families of the accused have decried the trial as politically charged and lacking credible evidence. Legal representatives have vowed to appeal the verdicts, which have drawn international scrutiny.

One particularly troubling development was the arrest of 70-year-old defence lawyer Ahmed Souab, who now faces terrorism-related charges for criticizing the court’s conduct. Türk warned that this development sets a dangerous precedent, threatening the ability of legal practitioners to represent their clients freely and fearlessly.

He further urged Tunisian authorities to “refrain from using broad national security and counterterrorism legislation to silence dissent and curb civic space.” The UN called for all charges to be dropped where insufficient evidence exists and emphasized the need to guarantee a fair appeals process for all defendants.

The trial comes amid growing concerns about Tunisia’s political direction since President Saied’s 2021 power consolidation, which has been widely viewed as a departure from the democratic gains of the 2011 Arab Spring.

As global attention turns to Tunisia, rights advocates are pressing for renewed commitment to democratic freedoms and judicial integrity in the North African country.
