Portsmouth City Council has appointed Mace to lead the delivery strategy for a major regeneration project in the city centre.

The international consultancy will work alongside Montagu Evans and Vail Williams to prepare a viability assessment and guide development of the City Centre North scheme, which data intelligence provider Glenigan values at £500m.

The 13.3-hectare site includes the former Tricorn Centre and a disused Sainsbury’s, which the council acquired to unlock long-term redevelopment potential. A resolution to grant outline planning consent is already in place, and the council has consolidated significant land ownership in the area.

Current plans include up to 2,300 new homes – a proportion of which will be affordable – and up to 10,000 square metres of commercial space. A large green space is also planned for the heart of the new neighbourhood.

Portsmouth City Council leader Steve Pitt said the appointment of the Mace team marked a key milestone following outline approval for the mixed-use development.

“This is a complex project with many different landowners and infrastructure challenges,” he said. “But this is a vital step to move forward and find potential partners to deliver our vision.”

Mace is due to report back to the council in October.
