Australian Greens Statement On Hazara Community | Mirage News

Australian Greens

The Australian Greens support the calls from the Hazara community and international human rights groups to recognise and condemn escalations in violence, the ongoing persecution and acts of genocide against the Hazara ethnic group in Afghanistan.

Hazaras have faced a history of repression, violence and structural discrimination by Governments and ruling parties in Afghanistan. Since the Taliban seized power in 2021, we have seen a return to impunity for those committing atrocities and the displacement and execution of Hazaras. The basic rights of Hazaras, particularly women, have been suppressed.

However, the resilience of the Hazara community is shown in the strength of the diaspora in Australia, and their ongoing advocacy to ensure justice and peace prevail.

The Greens are proud to support the Hazara diaspora, and have previously called on the Australian Government to ensure those who have made it to Australia are provided the safety they deserve, and are never forced to return to a place of persecution. This is one of the reasons the Greens are calling for an increase in Australia’s humanitarian intake to 50,000.

The Greens are committed to ensuring people coming here seeking safety are treated with dignity and respect, and we have a fair immigration system. That means ending the ban on refugees from Indonesia and providing a pathway to permanency for all those who went through the so-called ‘Fast Track’ system.

The Greens are concerned that inaction from the international community may lead to further escalations and a higher risk of genocidal violence against the Hazaras.

As a signatory to the UN Genocide Convention, Australia must uphold its obligation to prevent genocide, encourage the investigation of human rights abuses, and support mechanisms to strengthen accountability for international crimes.

In the 48th Parliament, the Greens will continue to engage with the Hazara community and amplify their calls for peace and justice.
